National Gumbo Day

October 12, 2014 | Back Of The House
National Gumbo Day

Today we celebrate the classic New Orleans dish Gumbo from one of the great food cities in the United States. Okra is a key ingredient and it wouldn’t be gumbo without it. Andouille sausage is another ingredient that is a must for gumbo. This is a great one-pot dish that you can have fun taking liberties with and it is open for interpretation.

You can use various types of seafood such as prawns, crab, lobster, mussels, clams, oysters and whatever else you can pull from the ocean. Poultry goes great with the seafood in this dish, try using chicken, pheasant, turkey, or duck. As for the sausage, spicy works the best.

Gumbo is typically served with a side of rice and this dish benefits from being made at least one day in advance so the ingredients can meld together. Enjoy!
