Gravenstein Apple

The Gravenstein apple is tart variety of apple and is ideal in cooked applications because it is more acidic and less sweet than other types of apples. It can be eaten raw but is usually used for a chutney or preserve or in pies and other baked goods and it can also be used in conjunction with sweeter types of apples like ___ Apple and ___ Apple to balance out the flavor. The best substitutes for Gravenstein apples are the Northern Spy Apple and the Granny Smith Apple.
